What do you want from God?

How many of us actually ask this question? Do we catch ourselves wishing for things to be different, hoping that a circumstance will change? Are we hurting because God seems to be silent when we cry out to him for something that we desperately need?

This Sunday morning we are starting anew series of talks on "David: the birth of a kingdom". I want us, as a community, to explore the stories of David and Saul and Samuel and see how these stories apply to us today. We're going to start with the story of Hannah; a woman who was desperately in need of God to help her; a woman who knew what it meant to feel the pain of victimization; a woman who was willing to give the one thing she most desired, back to God.

When Jesus met with one man who was in pain and in need he asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" (Mark 10:51). I believe that you and I are allowed and expected to ask God for the things we yearn for. The question is: are you willing to ask?

I am willing to ask, I just forget that its ok to ask. or maybe i feel like i dont deserve to ask, that my request is too small, or foolish or that i should be grateful for the blessings i do have and not want more. sometimes it feels that i wont be heard or that my request wont be answered the way i want. At the moment there's a lot i want from god, opportunitys, to see people get well, to change circumstances. I think i'll go and ask now, i'll pray for god to listen to me and pray that if the answer isn't what i want, that I can trust God and know me and the people i love are safe in his hands.

On Sunday we looked at 2 verses: 1 Samuel 1 and Mark 10: 35-52.

I've posted an overview on the website and an audio of the talk.

Do we want what God wants?
When Jesus asks "What do you want me to do for you?" what is our response?
Are we in danger of using Jesus as a divine vending machine, to get what we want?
